Beal Update
Submitted on Wed, 11/07/2007 - 15:58 — michelle This is a reminder that Beal staff are available every Thursday morning from 9:30 to 11:30 AM in Suite 600, in the Sharp Centre for Design at OCAD for discussion, exploration, mentoring. Bring your projects, passions, ideas and take advantage of a great resource. This week’s Show and Tell is going to be more ‘show’ than ‘tell’, more provocation than polished presentation. The theme is ‘Adult Play’ and the Beal researchers will be presenting 3-5 slides each to introduce a signal, an example or an observation that relates to the theme and addresses the questions ‘What is Adult Play?’ and ‘Why?’. Come join the discussion from 2 - 4 PM this Thursday, Beal Centre, Suite 600, Sharp Centre for Design, OCAD.

Thackara on urban sprawl: "it just happens—or so it appears"
Submitted on Thu, 08/23/2007 - 15:03 — Greg Van Alstyne While we were participating with Alex Manu in building a thinkmap on car-driven cities, I thought about this great quotation from John Thakara's In the Bubble (Thackara, 2005, 5 or here http://www.thackara.com/inthebubble/toc.html): "We’re being swept into unknown and dangerous waters by accelerating economic growth.... Our natural, human, and industrial systems, which evolve slowly, are struggling to adapt. Laws and institutions that we might expect to regulate these flows have not been able to keep up. "A good example is what is inaccurately described as mindless sprawl in our physical environment.
