Google takes on Wikipedia with Knol (from Knowledge). Differences will include advertising (possible revenue for content generators) and a rivalry based model with multiple entries on same subject attributed to authors.
107 million people, or, 1/3 of the active internet global population visited wikipedia this year making it the 8th most visited online destination. (Neilson)
I like that Google Knol is seeking to acknowledge plural viewpoints instead of searching for a one-sided consensus on belligerent discourse.
